Beyond red: A history of thermal imaging

Thermal infrared imaging has had quite an extensive history intertwined with some of the more profound discoveries leading to modern physics. Modern day research in infrared detectors has had a tremendous emphasis on military and defense applications but as the technology continues to mature, infrared imagers are beginning to find their way into civil applications including medical imaging, building maintenance and even the mobile device market. In this discussion, I will tell the story of infrared imaging from the time it was first accidentally discovered to the present in which you can now see in the dark, like predator, using your smart phone.
